Last week, the NFL released the 2026 regular-season schedule in full. The postseason schedule has yet to be unveiled, but NFL analysts and experts are taking deep dives into it to examine the quirks, the strength of schedule, and anything else they can nitpick out of the information we were given.

In a recent CBS Sports article, John Breech outlines over 20 scheduling quirks on this year's slate. At number 16, the Washington Commanders got their mention, along with the Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, and New Orleans Saints.

Rough road to start the season. There are only five teams in the NFL that will have to play their first TWO games on the road this year, and those teams are: the Browns, Packers, Dolphins, Saints, Commanders. Out of those five teams, the Commanders are the only one that will be facing two divisional opponents (at Eagles, at Cowboys), so they could be in a huge hole in the NFC East before the season even gets to Week 3.

Of the five teams mentioned here, the Browns (32) and Saints (31) have the two easiest strength-of-schedule in 2026. The Dolphins (2) and Packers (3) have two of the most difficult strength-of-schedule this season. The Commanders' strength-of-schedule ranks 16, right in the middle of the pack, but their first two weeks will be a trial by fire for the newly developed roster.

As Breech noted, the Commanders are the only one of those five teams with two divisional road games to begin the season.

Aside from the first two games being against divisional opponents and on the road, they'll return home to host the NFL's Super Bowl LX runner-up, the Seattle Seahawks. Then they'll fly overseas to face the Indianapolis Colts in London, England. Upon returning home, they'll face their third divisional opponent in the New York Giants, then travel across the country to face the San Francisco 49ers.

That's a heavy six-game slate for the Commanders. Their bye comes early, in Week 7 this year, and their schedule becomes significantly easier after that. Suffice it to say that by the time the bye week comes, we'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect from this team for the remainder of the 2026 season.
