When the Minnesota Vikings signed Kyler Murray to a one-year, prove-it deal, it confirmed the team was looking to upgrade from J.J. McCarthy. Still, the team is holding a competition between the two quarterbacks, and that is smart. A quarterback competition between Murray and McCarthy is a win-win situation. If McCarthy wins the job by playing better, then the team is rewarded for their draft investment. Murray will raise the floor of the offense if he wins the job, with room to grow.
The large assumption is that Murray will win the job, and it feels like it's trending in that direction. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirmed Murray is leading the competition on The Insiders.
Minnesota, again, I remember filling in on Insiders with you guys in this one. We, we kinda knew it was gonna happen, and then it did, and then it's Kyler Murray there. It feels like it's leaning that way?

Now, it's been an open competition and, and really what this organization wants to do is just view all the different checkpoints and make sure that they're getting all the information possible and that's in meetings, that's in training camp practices. I expect it to go into training camp games. It's a preseason games just to see when the lights come on, what is somebody like?
You know, like you, you were talking about the Carolina Panthers and their young quarterback. It's like you never know what someone's gonna be like when the lights come on. So J.J. McCarthy is a young, talented quarterback. We have no earthly idea how good he is gonna be. He hasn't played a ton with the lights on shining, shining on him.
So we will see where this ends up going, but to me, Kyler was their handpicked quarterback in free agency. He has done nothing to disappoint. So it feels like he kinda has the advantage here."
Judd Zulgad of SKOR North has been keeping track of the passing numbers between the two quarterbacks through eight practices.
McCarthy: 77/115 (67 percent), including 50/73 in team and 27/42 in 7 on 7.
Murray is 78/123 (63.4 percent), including 56/80 in 11 on 11 and 22/43 in 7 on 7.
Now, it is important to remember context. McCarthy is taking more checkdowns with Murray pushing the ball down the field. Also, it has been reported by many that Murray is conencting with Justin Jefferson much more than McCarthy is. However, McCarthy hasn't taken as many reps with the starters as Murray.
