Sports Illustrated's NFL insider Albert Breer is hearing that soon-to-be free agent quarterback Kyler Murray has "interest" in the Indianapolis Colts.
In Breer's latest mailbag, he was asked about potential landing spots for Murray, who is reportedly going to be released by the Arizona Cardinals next week.
Among the teams Breer mentioned were the Vikings, Jets, and Dolphins. He then added this interesting nugget at the end:
"I have heard Murray has interest in Indy," Breer wrote.
As far as why Murray would be interested in the Colts, Breer also had this to say:
"If the Colts re-sign Daniel Jones, both teams will have rehabbing quarterbacks who will have to really push to be back for the opener, and quarterback-friendly head coaches with strong development track records," Breer wrote. "So if Murray goes to either, he’d get starter reps through spring and summer, perhaps an opportunity to play early in the year, and the chance to reset under Shane Steichen or Kevin Stefanski."
The Colts, obviously, are fairly committed to Daniel Jones at the moment. The team placed the transition tag on him, and while Jones will have the opportunity to speak with other teams, the Colts can match any offers.
The plan all along this offseason for the Colts has been to retain Jones. And while the two sides have been unable to come to terms on a long-term deal, Jones speaking with other teams will help set his market.
It only takes one team to blow Jones away with an offer that would muddy things up for the Colts, but by allowing him to speak with other teams via the transition tag, GM Chris Ballard must be quite confident in their assessment of his value.
Unlike Breer mentioned, I just don't see a world where both Jones and Murray are on the Colts. Murray likely gets the opportunity to start elsewhere.
The only way I can see this working is if Jones receives a huge offer, the Colts choose not to match, and then pivot to signing Murray on what is expected to be a league minimum deal.
However, again, that seems unlikely.
