NFL GM Makes Concerning Prediction on Brendan Sorsby’s Future After Supplemental Draft Denial

Brendan Sorsby was the story of the offseason after his gambling addiction led to a domino effect that deeply divided both college football and the NFL. The former Red Raiders quarterback’s legal battle against the NCAA to regain his eligibility led to Texas Tech being shunned by some college football programs.

After he withdrew his suit against the NCAA and filed for the supplemental draft, the NFL decided not to hold one, leaving the quarterback in limbo.

NFL GM Speaks on Brendan Sorsby’s Draft Stock​

NFL insider J.L. Canfora revealed a concerning assessment of Sorsby’s draft stock from a general manager’s perspective.

“Do I still think he goes in the second round… Probably not,” said one GM. “There isn’t a comp for this, but not sitting out while everyone else plays. The timing now is going to work him again.”

Sorsby was the No. 1-ranked player in the transfer portal in January and coach Joey McGuire’s Red Raiders beat coach Lane Kiffin’s LSU Tigers for his signature.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the NFL will retain the right to investigate Sorsby’s conduct beyond the current public filings, but will not discipline him for prior misconduct. His college football indiscretions will also be fair game during the resolution of any future violations.

According to a memo sent to all NFL teams, Sorsby agreed to prepare for the 2027 NFL Draft instead of pursuing litigation against the league for not holding the supplemental draft.

“We have confirmed with the NFLPA and Brendan Sorsby that there will be no further litigation regarding his entry into the NFL — and that instead, Mr. Sorsby will focus on his preparation for entry into the League via the 2027 NFL Draft,” the memo reads.

“For purposes of League and CBA rules, Mr. Sorsby will be considered a ‘Draft-Eligible’ player for the 2027 NFL Draft. Mr. Sorsby will not be eligible to sign an NFL Player Contract until the completion of the 2027 NFL Draft.”

He earned a PFN College QB Impact score of 88.2, the 10th best in the nation, after tallying 2,800 passing yards on 61.6% completion, resulting in 27 touchdowns and five interceptions, while adding 580 rushing yards and nine scores for the Cincinnati Bearcats last season.
