The Philadelphia Eagles suddenly find themselves with an unusual situation at linebacker. Not long ago, the position felt like a yearly concern. Now, it might be one of the deeper areas on the roster. Nakobe Dean has been a key part of that story. When healthy, he has flashed the instincts, leadership, and downhill playmaking ability that made him one of the team's emotional, locker-room, and on-field leaders. It's an endearing trait, one he brought with him from his days with the Georgia Bulldogs.

His teammates respect him. His coaches trust him, and when he's on the field, he's often around the football. The challenge, unfortunately, has been availability. Dean has battled injuries throughout his NFL career, and durability concerns have followed him from the draft process through multiple seasons in Philadelphia.

That reality becomes harder to ignore when the Eagles' linebacker room continues to grow. Zack Baun remains on the roster. First-round pick Jihaad Campbell represents the future of the position. Young depth pieces like Smael Mondon and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. are waiting for opportunities.

Add in the financial side of roster building, and the situation becomes even clearer. Philadelphia will eventually need cap space to extend cornerstone players like Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis. Meanwhile, other roster needs still exist. Tough choices are inevitable for a front office constantly balancing today's roster with tomorrow's contracts.

Dean seems headed for the open market. If the Eagles do move on, several teams could make sense as landing spots.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills would be an intriguing fit. While the dots probably would have been easier to connect had Sean McDermott still been the head coach, Buffalo has long valued aggressive linebackers who can blitz and attack downhill.

Dean's instincts and closing speed could make him a disruptive piece on a defense that could benefit from pressure and versatility. They're coming off a season in which they seemingly had their best chance to reach the Super Bowl. They put up 30 in the Divisional Round of the AFC Playoffs and still lost in overtime.

Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota is another logical destination. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores loves creative blitz packages and linebackers who can quickly attack gaps. Dean's ability as a blitzer could make him a natural chess piece in that system for years to come.

Carolina Panthers

Carolina won the NFC South crown for the first time since their Super Bowl appearance to conclude the 2015-16 NFL season. They did so by default with an 8-9 record. Make no mistake. This team is still in rebuild mode.

We could dedicate an extended conversation to all of those times Carolina has gladly taken Philadelphia's castoffs. A young tone-setting defender with leadership qualities like Dean could give them the best middle linebacker they have had in a while.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts could also benefit from adding speed to the middle of their defense. Dean's range and instincts would complement a unit that has been searching for consistency at linebacker. Indianapolis needs pass rushers, as there is no one on this roster that anyone fears other than Laiatu Latu.

Their head coach is former Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen. He and Dean were together in 2022, the latter's rookie season in the NFL. A reunion would do both some good, as the Colts have yet to make the playoffs under Steichen.

Dallas Cowboys

Here's a move that would certainly raise eyebrows in Philadelphia. Dallas hired the Eagles' defensive backs coach as its new offensive coordinator, and rumors suggest Dean could join him.

Dallas values speed and aggressiveness at the second level, and Dean's familiarity with NFC East offenses could make him an appealing addition if the opportunity arose.

Here's the point, and here's where we'll land this plane. Wherever Dean lands, the formula for success will be simple.

If Nakobe Dean can stay healthy, his instincts, leadership, and playmaking ability give him the tools to become a difference-maker for the right defense.
