Ty Hamilton started all 16 games for the National Champion Buckeyes on the defensive line. Usually, you'd expect a sentence like that to precede a potential first-round pick. After all, you don't get to play every game on a team that good unless you yourself are also that good. And yes, Hamilton is that good. In college. The reason he's still on the draft board and expected to stay that way for a while is that NFL scouts seem concerned about how that will translate to the pros.

Draft Projection: Round 3-7

Pro Day Results (As Reported by The Columbus Dispatch)

Bench press: 35 reps of 225 pounds

Vertical jump: 32”

40-yard dash: 4.95 seconds

3-cone: 7.78 seconds

20-yard shuttle: 4.68 seconds

Broad jump: 9’3”

Hamilton has plenty of highlights on film. The problem for him is that they don't seem to come nearly often enough. In his 16 games in 2024, he recorded just 2.5 sacks and only six tackles for loss. Those aren't numbers that scream out for a high draft pick. What Hamilton does do well, though, is eat up blocks and be a threat on the defensive line. NFL teams seem concerned that he doesn't get off blocks well enough and that he is a bit undersized for a top linemam. Fair enough. But his quickness and movement are such that if he is facing anyone other than a top offensive lineman who's locked in, he will make teams pay.

Where does that land Hamilton? Well, it lands him on an NFL roster, even if he doesn't play much his first few years in the League. And that's the type of player that teams take when we get to the fifth and sixth round. Some mock drafts have him as high as late third round, which seems like a fair best-case scenario for him. Either way, Hamilton will be drafted to a team where he'll have a chance to make an impact, even if he still needs to improve a bit before we start seeing his NFL highlights instead of his college ones.
