Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has long been described as a “cerebral” player while ascending the NFL ladder to elite status.
Bengals fans might recall, after all, the debate about Burrow’s arm strength years ago. He squashed those whispers through some careful revisions to his throwing motion while recovering from a season-ending injury.
Since, injuries have come into focus as the biggest issue for Burrow. What isn’t up for debate, though, is Burrow’s near-best-in-the-NFL status thanks to his mind, which enables the vision, pocket movement and decision-making that drive coordinators to sleepless nights.
Just ask one coordinator polled by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
"Such a quick decision-maker," an NFL coordinator told Fowler. "The ball is out. That ball is OUT. It's so frustrating. And when it isn't out, he's just waiting for a deep ball to develop. He's got accuracy, arm strength -- a winner."
Fowler’s poll of the NFL wound up ranking Burrow fourth this time out. But it’s an annual list he’s outright topped at No. 1 overall in previous years.
Like nearly every Burrow-related conversation, it comes down to whether he can stay healthy. The elements that otherwise helped him peak as the best in the NFL on this sort of list haven’t gone anywhere and figure to be around a long, long time, too.
