The Cincinnati Bengals finally got it done with Joe Burrow.
After an out-of-comfort-zone, all-in offseason, the Bengals finally did the contract restructure with Burrow.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bengals saved roughly $10 million in cap space with the move.
What’s interesting about the move is that the Bengals could have restructured in a way that saved upwards of $19.2 million, but elected to hover around the $10 million mark.
Flexibility.
The Bengals ate a ton of cap space with the Dexter Lawrence trade, plus spending big in free agency. The front office had a bottom-five cap mark over the last few months. Re-doing the Burrow deal gives them some breathing room for things like injury replacements, if needed.
In all, this is a very, very standard contractual lever for a franchise to pull when paying a top-five quarterback. The Bengals of old wouldn’t have traded for Lawrence, letting Burrow’s deal stay as is and not re-doing it all.
So, more modern progress for the Bengals.
