CLEVELAND, OHIO - AUGUST 23: Defensive end Myles Garrett #95 of the Cleveland Browns warms up before an NFL Preseason 2025 game against the Los Angeles Rams at Huntington Bank Field on August 23, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images) | Getty Images
The Los Angeles Rams are finalizing the biggest trade of the NFL offseason, acquiring star pass rusher Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round draft pick, and additional draft compensation that is still being negotiated, according to multiple reports.
The Rams’ interest in trading for Garrett started earlier this year and general manager Les Snead would not take “no” for an answer, according to ESPN:
The Rams’ interest in Garrett was sparked shortly after the Browns modified the contract of the seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end in March, pushing back the options bonuses from the 15th day of the league year in March to seven days before the start of the regular season, making it easier to trade him.
But the Rams refused to give up what one source called their “persistent pursuit” of Garrett. Los Angeles, according to sources, continued calling and calling — the only team that tried to pry loose a player the Browns once deemed untouchable.
When Snead wants a star player who could be available for first round picks, he doesn’t give up. This is the same general manager that has traded for Matthew Stafford and Jalen Ramsey, among others, and this year he turned his attention to a player with 125 career sacks, the 20th-most of all-time.
The Browns would not agree to a trade until Snead included Verse, according to Adam Schefter, which Snead did not want to do until Cleveland lowered their asking price on the draft picks.
Rams’ Super Bowl odds got even better
This changes the outlook of the Rams tremendously, acquiring a former number one overall pick who had an NFL record 23 sacks last season for the Browns, both for next season and the long-term future of the team. Garrett is on a Hall of Fame trajectory and now he’s playing for Sean McVay.

Rumors of the Rams’ interest in Garrett started on Sunday night and less than 24 hours later, he’s been traded to L.A..
Was Jared Verse too much to give up?
By only giving up one first round pick that we know about, trading Verse in the deal makes more sense. Verse, the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year, and a two-time Pro Bowler, had 7.5 sacks last season and is only 25. He also costs a lot less money than Garrett. The Browns calculated that this move will save them $30 million.
The Rams now owe a guaranteed $41 million to Garrett in 2027 alone. The team may adjust his contract in the near future despite him just signing a four-year, $161 million extension in 2025 to stay in Cleveland, but Garrett is probably just happy that he’s finally on a team that will contend for the Super Bowl.
The #Browns were adamant about not trading Myles Garrett. But the #Rams were persistent, calling and calling. When they included Jared Verse and adjusted the picks, it was on. https://t.co/TggtzMSAj0

From the looks of it, that stay was not very long. Myles Garrett is about to be a member of the Los Angeles Rams and the defense has had an overhaul this offseason—between Garrett and Trent McDuffie—that historians might have to study for decades to come.
