It wouldn't be the Super Bowl if people didn't try to attribute some hidden, ludicrous subtext that doesn't exist to harmless branding. Taken a step further, assuming there is some malicious conspiracy involved with something as silly as an expensive football game is basically an American pastime.

I don't know why this thought phenomenon happens, per se. However, I do know it has something to do with the assumption that the Super Bowl is much more important to our social fabric than it actually is. (Note: It isn't.)

With the Seattle Seahawks' resounding victory in Super Bowl 60 behind us, it's already time to look ahead to next year's Super Bowl 61 in the Los Angeles area. That also means it's time for (brazen) internet sleuths to start believing the NFL is already telegramming its next matchup for the Big Game. Who that would benefit, I don't know. Why this is considered a step too far over a game for children, I also don't know. But stick with me here.

IF you believe that every year's Super Bowl logo is actually a way of subtly revealing who will play in it, well, the Super Bowl 61 logo's teal, red, and gold colors imply that congratulations are in order for ... the Miami Dolphins and Washington Commanders. Uh, sure. Whatever.

To put it lightly, dearest readers, that is not happening:

No intended disrespect to the Dolphins and Commanders, but this has to be amongst the least likely possible Super Bowl 61 matchups. You're telling me the Dolphins, with new head coach Jeff Hafley, will be playing for a Lombardi Trophy against a porous Commanders roster and organization in flux? Fat chance. There's a laundry list of respective AFC and NFC teams I would pick to play in Super Bowl 61 right now over both of these rudderless franchises.

Still, I can see why this madness happens. I'd venture to guess that not many people predicted a Seahawks-New England Patriots Super Bowl at this same time last year. Ugh. I suppose the conspiracy lives on by the absolute slimmest "anything is possible" thread.
