Newcastle United came into their matchup with Brighton & Hove Albion under more than their fair share of pressure, navigating a five-game losing skid, and playing to avoid seriously entering the relegation conversation in front of a Saudi contingent.
With intensified scrutiny on Eddie Howe’s talents amid a horrid run of results, the Geordies earned a convincing 3-1 win and—supposedly—helped the coach survive another weekend.
With members of the Saudi Public Investment Fund in attendance at St James’ Park, the match carried added weight. The Magpies, however, lost no time and made a fast start, taking the lead in the 12th minute after Bart Verbruggen rushed out of his goal and slipped, allowing Jacob Murphy to recover and cross for William Osula to head into an empty net.
Newcastle doubled their advantage in the 24th minute when Bruno Guimaraes delivered a corner that Dan Burn met with a header, giving the hosts early control of the match.
Obviously, this being Newcastle, even a two-goal lead was never super safe considering the team’s tendency to surrender points from winning positions.
The Geordies continued to threaten before halftime and could have extended the lead further, though a Nick Pope error at the other end nearly handed Brighton a goal before the ball struck the post, but luckily stayed out.
Despite the scare, Newcastle went into the break with a two-goal advantage, but they could do nothing to prevent Brighton from cutting the deficit in half by the 61st minute when Jack Hinshelwood finished a play following a Newcastle turnover.
That shifted the momentum and brought bad vibes to SJP. Newcastle were forced into a bit more of a defensive approach, and they kinda struggled a bit to regain control and relied on clearances and blocks to protect their lead.
The closing minutes followed that not-so-great familiar pattern, with Brighton pushing forward and Newcastle holding on and with former Magpie Yankuba Minteh having a ridiculously clear chance he missed…
…only before Harvey Barnes sealed the win in stoppage time with a finish from inside the box that saved the day for the Magpies and Howe.
Newcastle next face Nottingham Forest away from home, where they will look to build on this result, knowing they will not face relegation threats anymore, thanks to the win and the results elsewhere across the league. Disaster averted.
