The late Vernon Williams was one of six Newark graduates inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame on Jan. 31.
Williams played football and basketball as a student at Newark and was a member of the 1943 state basketball championship team. The summer before his senior year, however, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in France during World War II.
Following the war, Williams tried out for the Army basketball and baseball teams before receiving his discharge and eventually graduating from Newark High.
Williams coached his children's youth baseball teams and officiated high school basketball for more than 30 years. He died in 2006.
