The Washington County Golf Hall of Fame will induct nine former Smithsburg High School state champions during its Class of 2026 ceremony on Aug. 4 at Beaver Creek Country Club.
The Leopards' 2025 Class 2A-1A state championship team, including coach Dan Neff and players Brandon Sheaffer, Alicia (Grier) Moorhead, Dennis Herbert and Alex Wine, will be inducted. Smithsburg won the team title with 321 strokes, one shot ahead of Stephen Decatur, for the only team state championship won by a Washington County golf squad.
Also to be inducted are a quartet of former Leopards who won individual state championships. They are Angela Wacker-Williams (1990 girls), Seiji Hirai (2000 boys), Ashley Grier (2000 girls) and Haeun Lee (2008 girls).
Dave Walker, a past president of the Middle Atlantic PGA, and J.P. Lunn, a former club professional at Fountain Head Country Club and former president of the Middle Atlantic PGA, will be given special recognition awards.
Current members of the county golf hall include Dirk Schultz, Greg Henry, Mark Weber, Dave Grier, Al Gardner, Chuck Pessagno, Rod Steiner, Bert Yingling and Lumar Slocum (Class of 2019); Dick Roulette, Chuck Ingram, Greg McNaney and James Johnson (Class of 2020); Ken Lampard, Ashley Grier, Lee Cordell and Tim Koelble (Class of 2021); Tim Steiner and Chuck Thatcher(Class of 2022); and Randy Barnes and Elaine Morris (Class of 2024). There were no inductions in 2023 and 2025.
On the day of induction, the WCGHOF will hold a golf outing at Beaver Creek starting at 10 a.m. A social hour will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the ceremony.
