After a 2–8 start to the regular season, the New York Giants parted ways with head coach Brian Daboll midway through the year. The team promptly promoted offensive coordinator Mike Kafka to interim head coach, with the final seven games widely viewed as an audition for him to potentially secure the permanent role.
Kafka completed his formal interview for the Giants’ head coaching vacancy last week. However, as the organization continues to explore other candidates -- including several high-profile names -- he is scheduled to interview this week for two offensive coordinator positions.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions represent opportunities for Kafka to join programs closer to contention. Though both teams missed the playoffs this season, each won its division the previous year.
In recent years, Kafka has consistently drawn interest and interviewed for head coaching vacancies, which made him a natural choice to serve as the Giants’ interim head coach this past season.
As the Giants conduct their search for a permanent head coach, it remains uncertain whether the new hire would retain Kafka to provide continuity for the team’s young offense, particularly for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.
While Kafka is not currently generating interest for other head coaching openings, there is clear demand for his services as an offensive coordinator, including from the aforementioned Buccaneers and Lions.
