The New York Giants made a splash in last week's NFL draft when they traded up into the first round to grab Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart.
That was the easy part. Now comes the hard part -- molding Dart into their quarterback of the future.
General manager Joe Schoen recently said the Giants will not rush Dart into the job as they have two veteran options in starter Russell Wilson and backup Jameis Winston ahead of him on the depth chart.
Schoen mentioned the acclimation process would be similar to the one he and head coach Brian Daboll used for Josh Allen when they were in Buffalo with the Bills.
Josh Allen sat behind Nathan Peterman for a bit in Buffalo before the Bills unleashed him on the league where he achieved superstardom. No one is predicting that for Dart. Not yet anyway. He's got a long way to go in the process.
"That plan didn’t go as well, but we didn’t have a Russell Wilson or Jameis Winston in the room," Schoen said. "So again, Jaxson's going to come in, he’s got to learn the offense, there’s a lot to learn, these NFL offenses are hard to grasp and pick up and then be able to go out and execute, so the ability for him to learn and sit behind two consummate pros already will be beneficial for him."
Dart has yet to hit the field. He could very well go ahead -- or fall behind -- schedule. Either way, the Giants will move at their pace. Schoen is a man with a plan at quarterback. Finally.
