New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen expressed continued optimism regarding wide receiver Malik Nabers' availability for the season opener, despite the star pass-catcher's ongoing recovery from a right knee injury.
"I still think he'll be fine Week 1," Schoen told Yahoo Sports on Monday. "So we'll see. He's trending in the right direction. Again, these things take time, so it's not instant. Every patient is different."
Nabers, who earned Pro Bowl honors as a rookie in 2024 with 1,204 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in Week 4 of the 2025 season. He underwent a subsequent cleanup procedure in April to address scar tissue.
Head coach John Harbaugh has set a goal for Nabers to participate sometime during training camp, with the broader aim of having him ready for the Sept. 13 Sunday Night Football matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
To bolster depth in the meantime, the Giants have added veterans including Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster, Braxton Berrios, Calvin Austin III, and Darnell Mooney. These moves provide insurance while Nabers continues his rehabilitation.
Schoen emphasized the team's overall offensive versatility, noting strong contributions expected from the tight end and running back groups as they implement a flexible, positionless scheme under offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Nabers' potential return would serve as a significant boost to an already competitive unit.
