The New Orleans Saints add to their secondary in the third round.
The Saints selected Virginia safety Jonas Sanker with the No. 93 overall pick.

With the selection of Sanker and No. 71 overall pick defensive tackle Vernon Broughton, the Saints add to their struggling run defense. The former Virginia defensive back is a tackling machine, posting 205 tackles over the last two seasons. Sanker earned First-Team All-ACC over that span. The versatile defensive back also offers the flexibility to play in the box. Sanker added 12.5 TFLs and 16 passes defended over the last two seasons.
Sanker has the ideal size and measurements of an NFL defensive back but lacks the discipline in coverage. The 6-foot safety is often caught looking into the backfield and biting on play action, likely due to his eagerness.
Despite coverage concerns, Sanker could sub in for the Saints in the slot allowing the team to move cornerback Alontae Taylor to the outside. Guarding the possibility that Sanker doesn't see the field as a rookie on defense, his elite tackling and high motor make him a prime candidate for special teams early in his career.
New Orleans signed safety Justin Reid to a three-year deal earlier in the offseason and is already starting veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu. With the Saints safety duo set for at least the 2025 season, Sanker is likely a developmental piece that will see some playtime as a rookie.
