The Ohio high school girls lacrosse season has reached the regional semifinal stage, and six local teams remain alive for state championships, including two two-time defending champions.
Sixteen area players were featured in a poll to determine the central Ohio high school girls lacrosse regular-season player of the year. All of the votes are in, and the winner is New Albany’s Brooke Baker.
The junior midfielder and Xavier commit finished the regular season with 67 goals, 11 assists, eight caused turnovers, 22 ground balls and 101 draw controls.
The Eagles (14-6) visit defending state champion Olentangy Liberty (17-3) for the Division I, Region 1 final May 28.
“She is the driving force of the team and sets the standard through her consistency, preparation and elite competitiveness,” coach Elaina Enich said. “A true two-way midfielder, she impacts every phase of the game and is one of the most complete and dependable players I have coached.”
Baker, who received 50.87% of the vote, also qualified for the Division I state golf tournament in October, finishing fourth at district and tying for 19th at state.
Worthington Kilbourne’s Kate Williamson was second (13.9%), followed by Upper Arlington’s Evie Ruma (12.21%) and Ellie King (0.96%), Liberty’s Evie Howenstine (8.62%) and Megan Benton (1.52%), Grove City’s Mya Blakeman (5.08%), DeSales’ Anna Bogan (1.22%) and Campbell Heald (0.54%), Thomas Worthington’s Evelyn Bartalon (1.17%) and Meredith Estepp (0.34%), Pickerington Central’s Faith Osborn (0.92%) and Raegan Fowler (0.83%), Kilbourne’s Gray Beckett (0.82%) and Columbus Academy’s Bebe Smith (0.82%) and Kyndal Singleton (0.18%).
All of these players are candidates to make our All-Metro girls lacrosse team, which will be revealed as part of the Central Ohio High School Sports Awards. The live show is June 22 at Upper Arlington High School.
