Nevada's NIAA high school boys basketball state playoffs got under way this week, and the state's top-ranked Class 5A programs finally took the court Thursday evening.

It was a night for the favorites as the top three seeds all advanced to the semifinals with the No. 1 Liberty [Henderson, NV] Patriots cruising in an 84-56 win over the Sierra Vista [Las Vegas, NV] Mountain Lions to lead the way.

The No. 3 Coronado [Henderson, NV] Cougars also won big in a 71-34 rout of the Mojave [North Las Vegas, NV] Rattlers, but the No. 2 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels were pushed to the limit in a 69-65 win over the Centennial [Las Vegas, NV] Bulldogs.

The No. 4 Desert Pines [Las Vegas, NV] Jaguars were the only high seed to lose in Thursday's quarterfinals, falling in a 71-69 loss to the Democracy Prep Agassi Campus [Las Vegas, NV] Blue Knights.

Action resumes in the NIAA Class 5A playoffs on Wednesday, February 18, when the four semifinalists pair up with Liberty taking on the No. 5 seed Democracy Prep Agassi Campus while Bishop Gorman will face Coronado. The winners of those two semifinal games will meet in the Class 5A championship game on Friday, February 20.

The rest of Nevada's classifications are also working their way toward the state finals. The NIAA's Class 2A through 4A ranks are divided into Northern and Southern brackets with the two finalists from each division then advancing to the state semifinals in their respective classifications. Those state semifinals are all scheduled to take place on Friday, February 20.

The NIAA Class 1A ranks are divided into four subdivisions – Central, East, Southern, and West. The top two teams from each of those regions will then advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday, February 19.
