NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets guard Drake Powell is coming off an uneven rookie season in which he showed glimpses of his potential while also displaying where he needs to make improvements. Brooklyn is hoping that the second-year players like Powell will make significant strides as the team looks to improve off a 20-62 record and he explained how he's trying to do his part to get better.
"It's been good. I'm just spending time in the gym, the weight room, just trying to get better each and every day," Powell said to the media on Tuesday following summer league practice. The Nets will be doing something new this offseason as they're not only playing in the Las Vegas Summer League, but they will also be playing in the California Classic over the weekend where Nets fans will get to see players like Powell in action.
"But, I say the main thing was the weight room, just trying to build some muscle, get stronger and just add to my athleticism, just being able to move well on the court," Powell continued before explaining specific improvement areas for his game. "I'd say definitely finishing at the rim, as well as getting up more threes, and then I'd say getting to the paint, making the right reads for my teammates."
Powell, 20, is coming off a 2025-26 season in which he averaged 6.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 40.2% from the field and 28.0% from behind the three-point line. Powell saw plenty of playing time last season as head coach Jordi Fernandez was looking to get the rookies from the 2025 NBA Draft as much experience as possible in the early stages of the rebuild.
With the Nets selecting three players in the 2026 NBA Draft, Powell will have to show that he can be a solid contributor within the rotation, especially with veterans like Michael Porter Jr. and Julius Randle being in the fold. Powell has to show improvements on both ends of the floor if he is going to be a better player than he was last season and it sounds like he's taking that task seriously.
