While I tend to agree with you. I am certain there is a large portion of the country that never actually goes to the theater.
I used to go a couple times a month but the past decade im down to once or twice a year....or less, as the last movie I saw in theater was Dungeons and Dragons, until I recently went to see F4 and Superman(about a two year gap)...so in my case...Netflix is weighing the difference between 1 or 2 tickets a year and $8 every single month, rather I watch the service or not....so whatever their cut of the box office is..$7 did you say?...so for me $14 a year...or $96 a year in subscription fees.

...also, in an odd coincidence...shortening theater runs will in many areas actually increase ticket sales. For epic type movies the shorter chance to see it on the big screen will motivate many people to go see it now rather than put it off....I cant tell you how many movies I have missed just simply because I put it off a week thinking the movie will still be there..but then the following week it was no longer in theaters in my area(most recently, I have scheduled a trip to see the latest Avatar twice...but rescheduled both trips)....this sets a cultural expectation that the movie will only run on the big screen for X amount of time so I better go see it now. for many movie goers it will change the priority level of a trip to the theater.
however....I dont see how it could help out drama or RomCom movies,...those that dont really benefit from the huge screen or enhanced sound....many more of those will probably go straight to streaming.

Netflix may also further restrict there sharing of service. I have always gotten Netflix from my brother and his wife. The recent restrictions netflix added have made it so my sister in law has to come by and enter a code on my app so I can watch for two weeks....but I already no longer have it on my phone due to the issue of getting codes for both the phone and home TV....if they restrict further I will have to either get my own account or just not watch Netflix...I been mostly doing without since their program quality has dipped quite a bit the past 18 months or so...but the Stranger Things finale had me stressing over the service again, lol.
I might have to change my mobile service to T Mobile so I can get it for free.
Part of my argument is that a large percentage of the movie going public already has an account so they won't be getting additional subscribers from those people. They're definitely going to have to tighten up sharing even more but they can do that to get new subscribers without buying the WB.

If someone doesn't already have an account, are they really going to keep it running all year for the couple WB movies that they want to see? Using your example you could have subscribed for only one month, mid-july to mid-August to see Superman (would have hit july 28th) and F1 (would have hit July 11th). One month of sub fees.

A lot of people, myself included, already do this with them due to the lack of quality or titles I'm interested. Stranger Things got me to sub for a month but I'll be gone again until the next time. They might get another month out of me a year but it wouldn't be year round. I curious to see how the HBO Max subs factor into this too.

FYI, on T-Mobile, they only offer the standard version with Ads in some of their plans. I've been with them for years and never changed my plan to one that included it since the phone plan monthly cost would go up by more than me subscribing to Netflix's highest price tier directly.

Yeah Im curious about HBOMax too, I have that through my son.

but on subscribers, you are in the minority. I used to do infomercials and the reason everybody offers a 30 or 60 day free trial is because Americans are procrastinators. Thats the same reason Planet Fitness wants you on autopay. On a free trial, the box of absolute crap will sit in the corner until a week after the trial expires...and the gym memberships, even when folks know they wont be going...dont get cancelled for at least six months. Lots of studies out there prove and back up those marketing strategies.
Most folks, at best, will but a six month or year sub...then not renew at the end of term.. But if they get you on autopay they got you for six months...(not "YOU" obviously...but, the collective "you" as in average Joe Jackboot)

My saving grace in all this is the abundance in bootlegging softwares out there, lol...it gets to be too complicated in sharing services I will just get a firestick and jailbreak it.
Its how I get around sunday ticket to watch the redbirds and I will certainly use it against supercinemamegacorp to watch free movies.
My son had one..a bit tricky to master the usage. But once you got it down its easy to see which files to use for the best quality and least bandwidth...the one he had kinda worked like Limewire did back in the day.
It would show you a list of available files for the movie you want to see...and how much data they use...then you just select the one you want...bigger files for higher quality video, smaller files to keep your speed moving... and if you went just a bit north of the middle, you got HD video that did not tax your bandwidth....it was smooth at 100mb per second...and now I download at 1.3gigs per second...so stream quality would be great.
the only cost is the initial 60 bucks for the stick...they have jailbreaking titorials on youtube for free... or... if you dont want to deal with it..most swapmeets, and FB marketplaces, have them available pre broken for about $100

But I dunno man... these streaming services conned everyone into cutting the cord...and now that they got us they are turning into cable companies...with fewer options.
I predict one of the big guys, like COX or Spectrum, will come up with a plan involving streaming/cable hybrid that is cost effective and start shutting down these stream only services...I mean, cable companies lost in court in regards to throttling data...rightfully so...but they still control the ISP's and have the means to compete.
Its Spectrum here locally...and with my 1.3 gig broadband, I could see them developing an always on TV offering with all the basic cable channels, locals, and a couple premium services like HBO..and it not break the bank...since you kinda have to bundle it with internet.

at least Youtube didnt even presume...they came right out of the gate gouging you for $75 a month...no trickery or deception on their part, lol.

One note if you go that alternate firestick route. Get a VPN and do it over it. I'm a computer nerd, it's my day job, and you want that layer of protection when doing something like that. Feel free to DM me if you need info on them.

after seeing what Ellison has done with CBS News, I begrudgingly have to accept and root for Netflix to win the bid for WB. No way should the media be so consolidated by one person with an obvious agenda. If movies have to be sacrificed for the fourth estate to survive, that's price we have to pay to try and have a free society moving forward.

I would rather see them continue as a separate entity but that is not the current landscape. I mean the more companies we have out there competing etc. is better for the overall industry. However, I 100% agree. The Netflix scenario is vastly more preferable then the attempt by the MAGA oligarchs to purchase their way to silencing and continued brainwashing of the masses.

As much as I don't like Paramount buying WB it might end up being the better of two bad choices.
