By his own admission, Boston Celtics big man Neemias Queta is thrifty with his money, and given he has just signed his first big payday at the NBA level, one could hardly blame him. But that doesn't mean that money is the most important thing in his life – or even in his NBA career. In a recent interview with Portuguese outlet A Bola reporter Miguel Candeias, the topic turned to Queta's new, $56 million contract extension with the Celtics, the Lisbon native was asked about whether he might take some of his earnings boost to use on paying Hall of Fame big man Hakeem Olajuwon for some help developing his post game.
"I'm stingy. No, I don't spend $100,000 on training," said Queta of the prospect of spending his own dime on personal development (translation via Google Translate). "Not even with Hakeem Olajuwon." Still, stingy or not, his earnings were not the most important aspect of his extension with the Celtics this summer, according to the Celtics center.
"The most important thing was knowing that Boston believed in me for another four years," he explained.
"I'll be able to continue calling Boston home for that entire time, without having to look over my shoulder, without having to worry about the next season … There's uncertainty when you're a free agent," continued Queta.
"It creates certain difficulties in terms of knowing how to manage the year, injuries, and everything else, and I didn't want to be thinking about that. It was very good for me and I feel flattered to have that confidence from the front office."
