Nebraska Cornhuskers forward Eliza Maupin #21 WBB vs Oral Roberts | Nebraska Athletic Department
Nebraska (18-11, 7-11) was determined to avoid the bad loss, took control in the second quarter and never looked back. The last time I checked, the Huskers were predicted as the last team in (ESPN Bracketology) so every win matters. They will need to stack some wins in the Big Ten Tournament to feel better about their chances.
Four Huskers scored double digits in Hargrove (18), Petrie (16), Prince (14), and Bozan (12). Prince notched a double double with 11 rebounds. She also dished six assists. Nebraska shot 49% from the field (33-67) and held Rutgers to 40% (19-43). Nebraska outrebounded Rutgers 38-27 and won the turnover battle 22-5.
First Quarter Notes
Starters were Prince, Hake, Nissley, Bozan and Hargrove. Rutgers scored first but neither team found much success with Bozan missing two free throws and Hargrove a layup early on. Bozan finally got the Huskers on the board to tie the game (2-2). She then blocked a shot and swarming defense gave the ball back to Nebraska. Prince asserted herself with a a pair of free throws followed by a steal and layup (6-2 Neb). She then assisted a Hargrove three to extend the lead (9-2 Neb). Coach Washington’s timeout pep talk worked for the Knights as they scored five before the Husker posts Petrie and Hargrove nailed their shots in the paint (13-7 Neb). The Knights committed six turnovers, including two offensive fouls.
The Knights didn’t go away as an eight point lead evaporated to two (15-13 Neb) with two minutes to play. Kennadi Williams notched a layup, assisted by Fisher, and then forced another turnover with her pesky defense. Hargrove decided she wanted a steal and layup too. Second Quarter Notes
The Knights did not go away and opened the quarter with a five point scoring run that was broken by a Petrie three (27-21 Neb). Another Rutgers turnover was followed by a Hake layup (29-21 Neb). The stat of the game so far…Nebraska leads in turnovers 11-1. Coach Williams will take that every day of the week and twice on Saturday! A Petrie layup increased the lead to double digits (31-21 Neb). The Huskers rattled off five more points, including a three from the senior Hake and the lead ballooned to 15 (36-21 Neb).
How’s this for a stat line? Britt Prince, six points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Again, Coach Washington’s timeout pep talk helped as the Knights scored right out of the break (36-23 Neb). Nebraska put a very defensive-minded lineup on the floor in Williams, Weaver, Hake, Petrie and Fisher. Petrie keyed the next two minutes including a free throw make and some good rebounding. A Nissley three here, a Hargrove scoop and score there and it was a 19-point lead (42-23 Neb). Rutgers hit on a three but both teams clanked from distance over the next few possessions (42-26 Neb). A Knight basket and Hake three capped scoring for the half.
Nebraska 45 Rutgers 28
Hargrove leads Nebraska with nine points, Hake and Petrie have eight apiece. Prince has six rebounds and five assists. The Huskers are shooting 44% from the field (16-36) while Rutgers is at 48% but shooting much less in volume (11-23). The turnover margin is 14-2 in favor of Nebraska and rebounds 18-16 for the Big Red.
Third Quarter Notes
Within a blink it was a 20 point lead after Nissley’s third long range make (48-28 Neb). Six points by Hargrove were sandwiched around a Rutgers basket (54-30 Neb). The Knights responded with a two-baskets for one sequence of their own to cut the lead to 22 (56-34 Neb). Senior Haley Weaver went down after a hit to the face but seemed to be okay. After review, a flagrant one foul was called. Any guesses on who Amy Williams sent to the line?? Prince missed one (STOP THE PRESSES) but made the other (57-34 Neb). Nebraska was awarded possession because of the flagrant one and capitalized with a Prince three (60-34 Neb). One more Rutgers offensive foul and Nebraska was in the bonus. That last one was also reviewed and upgraded to flagrant one which resulted in an ejection for Ndiaye (because it was her second flagrant foul).
Prince went to the line and again missed one free throw (61-34 Neb). After a missed shot by Petrie, the Huskers committed two fouls in three seconds of game time. A Hargrove three-point play increased the lead to 30 (64-34 Neb).
HOLY COW PRINCE MISSED A THIRD FREE THROW. Will she still be leading the Big Ten in free throw % at the end of the day?
The Husker lead grew to 35 (69-34 Neb). Both teams were in the bonus so the last few minutes of the quarter felt like an eternity. ALL THE FOULS. Claire Johnson accounted for four Husker points and Emily Fisher two in that stretch.
Nebraska 75 Rutgers 40
Fourth Quarter Notes
Turnover margin update: Rutgers 19, Nebraska 2. The first two and a half minutes saw a game of clanky-ball break out with a lot misses on both ends of the floor. Bozan was the first to watch one go in the hoop (77-40 Neb) at 7:25. The Husker lead exceeded 40 at the 5:56 mark (81-40 Neb). Rutgers finally got on the board at 5:56 with a three pointer (81-43 Neb). The Huskers doubled their turnovers for the game with two in quick succession.
The final four minutes happened.
