Nebraska baseball (43-15) hosted the NCAA Regional for the first time since 2008 on Friday afternoon, welcoming South Dakota State (24-32) for game one. Following a close battle, the Huskers busted the lead open in the eighth and secured a 4-1 win over the Jackrabbits.
Nebraska took the lead in the fourth inning, picking up two runs after hitting shots off the gloves of South Dakota's infielders. The Jackrabbits got close in the seventh to taking control of the game, earning one run after the Huskers snatched two outs at home plate, escaping the inning. Nebraska then picked up two insurance runs in the eighth off two solo home runs.
Dylan Carey and Jett Buck contributed the solo shots. Carey finished 3-for-3 on the day. Buck batted 2-for-4 but also helped the Huskers' defense by throwing out a runner at home from left field in the seventh. Trey Fikes and Mac Moyer picked up the two runs in the fourth, each earning their only hits of the game. The team finished with nine hits.
Carson Jasa (10-2) grabbed the win on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings. He fired eight strikeouts on the day and allowed five hits, two walks and one run. J'Shawn Unger took over in the seventh, tossing the final 2.2 innings and earning his 13th save of the season. He picked up four strikeouts against two hits and a walk.
Nebraska faces the winner of Arizona State/Ole Miss on Saturday night. The first pitch is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
