Minnesota women’s basketball will begin its first NCAA tournament since 2018 as the No. 4 seed against No. 13 seed Wisconsin Green Bay on Friday/Saturday at Williams Arena.

The 18th-ranked Gophers knew they were going to play host to first- and second-round games after the NCAA revealed the tournament’s top 16 seeds on Sunday. But they learned their seed, placement and opponent during ESPN’s selection show Sunday evening.

Surrounded by the pep band, cheerleaders and a few dozen fans, the Gophers (22-8) gathered on the Barn’s raised floor to watch the show on the arena’s scoreboard. And while there was zero drama about whether they would make the field of 68, the team burst into cheers when its name was called, regardless.

It’s been a while. The last time the Gophers were a part of March Madness was 2018, when they won a first-round game against Wisconsin-Green Bay in Eugene, Ore., before losing to the host Ducks. It will be Phoenix again, but this time at home, where the Gophers were 13-3 this season.

Wisconsin-Green Bay (25-8) was the Horizon League’s regular-season champion and earned the conference’s automatic berth by beating Youngstown State in the league’s tournament championship.

Games will be Friday through Monday, but details were not immediately released.

Minnesota earned its seed by finishing fourth in the Big Ten with a 13-5 record, and a tie-breaker against No. 11 ranked Ohio State, and while the Gophers lost a rematch against the Buckeyes in their only conference tournament game, they were 8-2 in their past 10 games and were ranked No. 9 in the NET rankings.

The Gophers have victories over three ranked opponents, including a 91-85 road win over No. 7 Iowa on Feb. 5.

Five Big Ten teams will be host to first- and second-round games: Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State and UCLA. Maryland and Michigan State, which each beat the Gophers in Minneapolis this season, also made the field, and Illinois was placed in the play-in bracket with an 11 seed.
