With one week to go in the regular season, the host teams saw a shake-up in the NCAA baseball tournament projections.
From last week, Kansas, Oregon State and Coastal Carolina dropped out of hosting spots. West Virginia, which swept Kansas, was one of the new beneficiaries, along with Big Ten teams Nebraska and Oregon. Those teams were chosen over bubble candidates Wake Forest, Southern Cal and Oregon State due to their superior Quadrant 1 records.
On the bubble, new at-large teams Purdue and Louisiana joined the field, while East Carolina dropped out. The Pirates were the first team out due to a 52 RPI and a 3-6-1 Quad 1 record. Texas State is another team to watch; its RPI is 43 and Q1 record is 5-8, but the Bobcats were left out of the field due to a below .500 Sun Belt record. A series win over Marshall could push them over the line.
This week showed a lack of power conference teams on the bubble. Several power conference teams had either poor conference records (Clemson, Pittsburgh, LSU) or RPIs (Vanderbilt) that kept them out of the field.
The 2-seeds were seeded and assigned in groups of four, with the exception of Oklahoma, which was moved down to avoid an SEC rematch. The 3- and 4-seeds were assigned geographically.
Projected autobids were selected using the current conference leader, with RPI as a tiebreaker. Automatic bids are marked with an asterisk (*).
