With the 2026 NBA Draft set to arrive in just two days, the basketball world was abuzz yesterday with the possibility that Giannis Antetokounmpo could be switching teams to another Eastern Conference squad. Now, there were steady rumors that Giannis was going to relocate back at the Trade Deadline, but that potential transaction is gaining a considerable amount of steam with the Miami Heat emerging as the top suitors for the Greek superstar.

In the rumored deal, both the Bucks and the Heat would need to find a third (or fourth) team to work with in order for the salaries to fit on all sides. From Miami’s perspective, the Heat would be looking for a team that’s willing to take on the final season of Tyler Herro’s four-year, $120 million deal, and it wouldn’t take too much wiggle room for the Detroit Pistons to make that happen.

After being eliminated from the playoffs in the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers, it became clear that the Pistons needed more than just one sharp-shooter from three-point range in the postseason. Duncan Robinson executed his role to a tee with a 45.6% rate from beyond the arc, but Detroit needed even more three-point firepower once the Cavs stacked the paint with defenders. In theory, Herro would immediately address this roster imbalance.

NBA Trade Talk: Detroit Pistons Inch Closer To Acquiring Tyler HerroThe Detroit Pistons could feature in a blockbuster three-team trade involving Giannis Antetokounmpo and Tyler Herro ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft
At 6-5 and 205 pounds, Herro had another 20-point per game scoring season a year ago, but he struggled to stay on the court with health issues limiting the guard to just 28 starts out of 33 games. But focusing less on an injury-riddled 2025-26 campaign, Herro is a career 38% three-point threat, so his presence on the perimeter would immediately create more gravity on the outside for the Pistons, thereby making the job that much easier for Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren (presuming the All-Star center returns to the Motor City).

Given that the Pistons would likely have to part ways with at least two players in order to make the money match, there is a chance that Detroit is forced to trade Isaiah Stewart, Ron Holland or Caris LeVert in the deal. Stewart is the highest-earner of the group with a $15 million price tag for next season, but LeVert is not far behind. Holland, on the other hand, is set to make over $9 million since he’s still on his rookie deal, but all three players represent assets that could help the Bucks rebuild.

If Herro does in fact start next season in Motown, the Pistons would benefit from a healthy competition at the two. Cunningham obviously has the point guard position locked up, as does Jalen Duren if he returns this offseason, but Ausar Thompson is a bit of a more interesting case. Thompson functions as the team’s chief point-of-attack defender on the perimeter, so he’s often guarding opposing point guards or dynamic shooting guards. But on the offensive end, Thompson lacks the self-creation and shooting ability that most players offer at the two, so he’d project as a wing with Herro serving primarily as an off-ball guard with Cunningham running the point.

In the frontcourt, the Pistons are expected to bring Tobias Harris back during the summer according to Trajan Langdon, and the team is also looking for successful discussions with Duren about returning as a restricted free agent during the summer. IF both of those moves come to fruition, then Detroit could significantly upgrade their perimeter shooting with the three-team Herro trade without sacrificing any members of their starting lineup from last year, but it all depends on how the final negotiations go with both the Bucks and the Heat in the lead-up to the draft on Tuesday.
