All across the NBA, teams are making moves left and right now that the free agency period has officially opened, and the Detroit Pistons are no exception after bringing in power forward John Collins on a three-year deal. But apart from the litany of signings that have taken place across the hoops world, the trade market has been equally active with major stars such as Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Jaylen Brown switching teams during the summer.

In terms of trades, the major focus regarding the Pistons is whether or not Detroit would entertain a sign-and-trade deal with All-Star center Jalen Duren as the centerpiece. While nothing has materialized on that front yet, the Pistons did work out an agreement that will send guard Marcus Sasser to the Dallas Mavericks, but the full details of that trade will not be available for a few more days.

Dallas has now lined up deals to be made official once the moratorium is lifted July 6 to acquire Aldama as well as Detroit's Marcus Sasser and clinched this trade by dealing a 2030 first-round pick via Golden State (protected 1-to-20) also acquired in the Anthony Davis swap. https://t.co/QMYWGytoBW

According to NBA correspondent Marc Stein, the Pistons are sending Sasser to the Mavs as part of a larger deal that involves Santi Aldama of the Memphis Grizzlies. At the moment, there is a moratorium that prevents Aldama from being moved until July 6, so more details will become public at that time.

With regards to Sasser, the three-year NBA pro out of Houston averaged 5.2 points per game last season, which marked the second consecutive campaign that the guard saw his points and games played decrease compared to the previous season. Now, Sasser battled a right hip impingement that limited both his availability and effectiveness last season, but the Pistons currently have a wealth of guards on the roster after trading for Isaiah Joe and selecting Ebuka Okorie in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Given the fact that Detroit’s roster is rather imbalanced from a backcourt perspective with only three big men on the squad until Ugonna Onyenso signs his rookie contract, the Pistons needed to move somebody in order to establish some equilibrium in the Motor City. As it turned out, Sasser was viewed as a piece the Detroit brass were comfortable parting ways with, and the speedy combo guard will have a fresh opportunity to regain his footing with the Mavericks.

Although the full details of this prospective move are not readily available, the Pistons are expected to receive cash considerations for Sasser’s services, which will in turn provide Detroit with even more flexibility to maneuver both the free agency and trade markets. So far, Pistons President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon has made an effort to execute transactions that would give the organization optionality during the offseason, and dealing Sasser to Dallas for cash would do just that.

Considering Sasser was originally a first round selection for the Pistons at No. 25 overall, the 6-1, 195-pounder never made the impact in Motown that was expected of him. Once Daniss Jenkins ascended from the G-League to become a regular, contributing member of the Pistons’ rotation, it seemed as if the writing was already on the wall for Sasser’s time in Detroit, and this deal with the Mavs would close the book on a chapter of Sasser’s career that may be remembered as an unfinished draft.
