NBA rumors swirl: Could Celtics really break up core for Giannis if playoffs go wrong? originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The NBA doesn’t do “quiet” when it comes to rumors, but this one grabbed attention for a reason.

A report from Sam Amick suggests the Boston Celtics could at least consider a dramatic move if their playoff run falls short. The idea? Taking a hard look at a potential deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo, even if it means moving one of their stars, Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown.

That is not something teams say out loud unless the stakes are real.

Sam Amick says the Celtics could look at trading Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown for Giannis:

“If they get bounced in the 2nd round... they're gonna look at the landscape.”

This is about pressure, not panic

Boston isn’t just good. It is expected to win.

At 54-26, the Celtics are built for a deep playoff run. They have two elite wings, a proven system, and a roster that looks like it should be playing in June. So if that ends early, especially in the second round, it would not be brushed off as bad luck. It would raise real questions.

And that is where this kind of thinking starts.

Why Giannis changes the conversation

If you are going to even think about breaking up a core like this, it has to be for someone special. Antetokounmpo is that level of player.

The Milwaukee Bucks star is still one of the most dominant forces in the league, putting up 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists while shooting over 60 percent. He does not just score. He overwhelms teams. He changes how defenses have to play every possession.

Adding Giannis would not be a tweak for Boston. It would completely reshape how they play.

The part people should not ignore

Right now, this is just a conversation. Nothing more. There is no deal on the table. There is no sign that Milwaukee is ready to move its franchise player. And Boston would not take a decision like this lightly.

Because moving Tatum or Brown is not just about talent. Brown is averaging nearly 29 points with improved playmaking. Tatum continues to do a little bit of everything at a high level. Together, they have defined this era of Celtics basketball.

You do not move players like that unless you are absolutely convinced it raises your ceiling.

Why this rumor feels different

This is what makes the NBA so fascinating. Even the best teams are always one disappointing series away from tough decisions. The margin between “contender” and “change everything” is thinner than it looks.

For now, Boston is still chasing a title with the group it has. But if things fall short, this is the kind of idea that does not just stay a rumor for long.
