To no one’s surprise, the Detroit Pistons have been working on bringing restricted free agent Jalen Duren back to the Motor City on a long-term basis this offseason, but that is a task which has proven easier said than done. Duren is eligible for a max contract after making the All-NBA Third Team as a result of his 19.5-point, 10.5-rebound effort during the regular season, but Pistons President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon is reportedly eyeing a lower Average Annual Value for JD after his heavily-publicized postseason struggles.
Apart from that contract situation, the Pistons were involved in a massive six-team trade which was announced last night, and it’s a major move which could very well have ramifications for JD’s new deal. Since the Pistons offloaded Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies, Marcus Sasser to the Dallas Mavericks and Caris LeVert to the Milwaukee Bucks, Detroit now has even more financial flexibility at their disposal.
According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, the Pistons are going to be roughly $48 million below the luxury tax line after that six-team exchange, and that’s a total which is more than enough to re-sign Duren and have a little bit of change leftover to work with if they so choose.
The Pistons offloaded $35 million by trading Stewart, LeVert and Sasser, and there’s considerable discussion that Detroit could be in the running for the services of Denver Nuggets wing Peyton Watson considering their newfound financial mobility. Last season, Watson started in 40 of the 54 games that he logged for the Nuggets and put up 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game along the way, but the 6-8, 200-pounder would also add elite perimeter defense at the point of attack for Detroit, which is obviously a skill set that the squad covets and places a high level of importance on.
Watson, who is a restricted free agent this offseason, has only been in the NBA for four seasons at this point, so he’s a player that could continue to grow and develop with the Pistons if he actually does swap his jersey this summer. In terms of defensive playmaking, Watson averaged two stocks per game (1.1 blocks and 0.9 steals) for the second consecutive season, so his tenacity and instinct as an on-ball defender would mesh perfectly with Ausar Thompson after his Defensive Player of the Year podium finish.
In fact, a defensive tandem of Watson and Thompson on the wings would be one of the more imposing combinations in the league, so it’s a worthwhile option to consider for Langdon after adding Isaiah Joe and John Collins this summer. And on top of his immense defensive quality, Watson shot the three-ball at a 41.1% clip for Denver, so he’s a true, bone fide 3-and-D player that would easily find his way into regular playing time for the Pistons.

Update: With Marcus Sasser traded to the Mavericks, the Pistons are now ~$48M under the luxury tax.
That's with 15 players under contract. More than enough room to re-sign Jalen Duren or to take back some money in a sign-and-trade where Duren lands elsewhere. https://t.co/3lQ8ulEbPC
