Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James isn't sure yet what his NBA future holds, but many fans have a suggestion for the 40-year-old's future in the league.
James and the Lakers entered the NBA playoffs harboring title hopes, especially after the team's midseason acquisition of Luka Doncic. Instead, they saw their season come to an abrupt end on Wednesday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Lakers fell apart in the fourth quarter of Game 5, scoring just 16 points as the Timberwolves fought their way to a 103-96 victory. James struggled from the field, scoring 22 points on 9-of-21 shooting including just 1-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc.
Speaking to reporters after the game, James said he wanted to take some time to mull over his future before making a decision on retirement.
Many fans urged James to retire, suggesting that his best years are behind him and the Lakers have no clear plan for the future. After leading the Lakers to a title in 2020, James has suffered through three first-round exits and another season of missed playoffs.
"if i’m LeBron i’m retiring," a fan shared on X. "They have wasted and mismanaged his final years. The Luka trade was for the FUTURE. The Lakers went into the Playoffs without a legit center/interior size and that weakness was ultimately exposed."
"LeBron needs to retire. 1st round exit in 3 of last 4 seasons… and getting swept in WCF the 1 season he made it out of 1st round… That 2020 bubble title provides a lot of cover for a mediocre 7 seasons in LA," another wrote on X.
Others suggested that James has left his best years in the past.
"LeBron is an old man. he needs to retire," a fan wrote on X. "this is the first time I've ever watched him in a playoff game and thought he has just lost a step vs everyone else."
While James is taking time to make a decision on retirement, he has previously said he feels good enough to play another five to seven years in the NBA.
