Nationals get big trade update on CJ Abrams from MLB insider originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Washington Nationals, even though they're currently 35-35 and within striking distance of a spot in the postseason, are often mentioned as a trade deadline seller.

This season wasn't meant to be a contending one for the Nationals; it just so happens that their offense is one of the best in baseball this season. And speaking of that good offense, CJ Abrams is having a breakout season with an.895 OPS.

But, with that breakout year in the works, Abrams' name has popped up in trade rumors constantly this season so far. With those rumors flying around, MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided.com shared a big trade update that is good news for Nationals fans.

CJ Abrams trade update is a big one for Nationals

"My expectation is - despite what will likely be tons of phone calls about Abrams - the Nationals will likely hold onto the young shortstop," Murray writes.

While there is a ton of interest in the Nationals' All-Star shortstop, Murray doesn't expect Abrams to be dealt this season.

While Paul Toboni won't instantly hang up the phone on trade inquiries, it's hard to imagine a team making an offer that's so hard to refuse when the price tag for Abrams is already going to be so high.

He is only 25 years old, is breaking out in a major way this season, and is under club control through the 2028 season.

Washington will get at least two more years out of Abrams after 2026, unless they work out a long-term extension with him for the foreseeable future.

Their window of contention isn't quite open just yet, but there's no denying that James Wood and Abrams should be centerpieces of the Nationals' offense for many years to come.

At some point, the Nationals have to try to exit this rebuild. With Abrams breaking out and James Wood proving his incredible 2025 wasn't a fluke, it looks like the time is rapidly approaching for the Nationals to become a legitimate postseason contender.

Trading Abrams wouldn't be conducive to such a future, and the All-Star shortstop in the middle of a breakout season should not be traded. Fortunately, based on Murray's update, it appears unlikely that Abrams is going anywhere this season.
