The Muenster softball team broke a tie in the seventh inning to take Game 1 of its Class 2A Division II state semifinal series 6-5 over Sundown on Thursday at Abilene Christian University's Wells Field.
Skyler Reed's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh broke a 5-all deadlock and proved to be the difference. It was the first run since the reigning champion Roughettes scored four to tie the game in the third inning.
Sundown (28-4) had runners on second and third in the bottom seventh after Breigh Gregory's double to left field. Brynly Gregory struck out looking on a full count to end the game.
It was the Hornets' first win over the Roughettes in two semifinal series. Sundown swept last year's meeting en route to the 2A D-II state championship.
Muenster (28-4-2) opened the game with three runs in the top of the first and led 5-1 through 2½ innings. The Roughettes tied the game on consecutive at-bats — Brynly Gregory's two-run double and a solo home run by pitcher Destiny Garza.
Garza took the loss, her first of the postseason, after allowing four earned runs on nine hits with one strikeout and two walks. The result snapped Sundown's 15-game winning streak.
Game 2 is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, back at Wells Field. If necessary, a decisive third game will be played 30 minutes after.
