Russell Wilson can breathe a little bit easier now. Not by much, at least.

There is a new king of the dead-money deal, with breaking news out of Miami. The Miami Dolphins have announced they are parting ways with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who will be designated a post-June 1 cut, plunging the Dolphins into an even worse calary cap situation than the Denver Broncos found themselves in with Wilson's contract.

Tagovailoa's contract is set to hit the Dolphins' books at a staggering $99 million dead-money cap hit, the largest in NFL history. Wilson set the mark prior to the 2024 season when he was released by the Broncos at $85 million. Wilson played two seasons in Denver under that horrendous contract, which many fans still consider to be one of the worst contracts in franchise history.

Of the 13 biggest dead money hits in NFL history, Wilson appears twice on the list: once as a Seattle Seahawk, and then for Denver, totaling $111 million in dead money for the once-star quarterback. Since Wilson's time in Denver, he has signed deals with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants. Wilson was benched in 2025 in favor of Giants rookie Jaxson Dart. Russ is also set to hit free agency, looking for his fourth new team in as many seasons.

The Broncos are now free of Wilson's contract, a situation Sean Payton likened to having more money to spend on a house renovation. Wilson and Tagovailoa will now look for new homes on more reasonable contracts.
