Most runs by an Indian captain in a T20I series in SENA nations: Shreyas Iyer goes past Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav originally appeared on Cricket News. Add Cricket News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- Shreyas Iyer surpasses Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav's records for most runs by an India captain in the SENA series.
- His unbeaten 80 in Bristol included 44 runs off just a 16-ball Rashid Khan spell.
- However, his captaincy is under scrutiny after two consecutive series defeats.
Shreyas Iyer outscores Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav to set new captaincy record in England
Shreyas Iyer has gone and done something no Indian captain has managed before, piling up more runs in a single T20I series in SENA conditions than anyone who's led the side previously.
However, he's done it while the team around him keeps losing. With 190 runs already in the bag from the England series and still counting, Iyer has now gone past Suryakumar Yadav's 156-run haul from the South Africa tour in 2023, along with Virat Kohli's 134 runs during the 2020 series in Australia.
It's telling that even as India's results have gone from bad to worse, Iyer's own batting hasn't dipped; if anything, he's been the one player consistently holding things together with the bat.

| Captain | Runs | Matches | Series |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shreyas Iyer | 190* | 3* | England 2026 |
| Suryakumar Yadav | 156 | 2 | South Africa 2023 |
| Virat Kohli | 134 | 3 | Australia 2020 |
His unbeaten 80 off 49 balls in Bristol alone accounted for more than half of India's total, standing out as a lone fighting effort in a contest England ultimately won comfortably. That knock was preceded by scores of 37 off 22 balls and 68 off 47 balls in the earlier fixtures.
Only two Indian batters have ever scored more off a single bowler in a T20I innings than what Iyer managed against Rashid. Sanju Samson tops that list with an unbeaten 45 off just 10 balls against Rishad Hossain in Hyderabad back in 2024, while Ruturaj Gaikwad isn't far behind, as he smashed 44 not out off 15 deliveries against Aaron Hardie in Guwahati in 2023.

Where does Shreyas Iyer stand among India's best ever?
Iyer's overall series tally also places him firmly among the finest T20I series performances by any Indian batter, regardless of format or opponent.
Sanju Samson currently tops that particular list, having scored 321 runs at an average of 80.25 during the 2025/26 T20 World Cup held across India and Sri Lanka, striking three fifties along the way.
Kohli's 319 runs during the 2013/14 World T20 in Bangladesh sits just behind, followed by Ishan Kishan's 317 runs from the same 2025/26 World Cup campaign.

Captain Iyer under the scanner after two back-to-back series defeats in Ireland & England
Iyer's batting numbers genuinely deserve recognition, outscoring both Kohli and Surya in SENA conditions as captain is no small feat, especially while carrying the team almost single-handedly at times.

But captaincy is judged on more than personal runs, and here the picture looks considerably less flattering. His bowling changes have repeatedly raised eyebrows, and his decisions will be under review when the BCCI convenes for a performance assessment after the ODI series.
Iyer's batting suggests genuine leadership by example, but until his tactical decisions with the ball match that individual excellence, his captaincy record will remain a mixed bag rather than an unqualified success story.
