Only one of the eight college baseball teams traveling to Omaha for the 2026 College World Series will ultimately leave Nebraska with the sport’s most coveted prize. But even being there in the first place isn’t a bad consolation prize.

The CWS is the biggest stage in college baseball, a place teams across the country begin their seasons in the frigid days of winter hoping to reach. Much like the Final Four in men’s and women’s basketball, it’s a step in the journey that doubles as a destination.

Because of that importance, CWS appearances are one of the most cited metrics when weighing a program’s historical place in college baseball. Even if you don’t have a lot of titles, merely getting to the CWS shows what kind of mettle a program has and the heights it can reach.

Making it to Omaha means different things for different programs. For Texas, which has been there nearly 40 times, it’s an expectation. For Troy and West Virginia, which are in the CWS for the first time ever, it’s a historic feat.

But who’s been in the CWS the most in the event’s history?

Most CWS appearances

The team that’s had the most all-time CWS appearances just so happens to be one of the teams in this year’s field.

Texas has been to the CWS more than any other program in college baseball, with this year’s trip marking its 39th time in the event. It’s an honor that comfortably belongs to the Longhorns, too. No other college baseball program has been to the CWS more than 25 times (Miami, which hasn’t been to Omaha since 2016).

The rest of the top five is, in order, Florida State (with 24), Arizona State (22) and USC (21). The Trojans very nearly made it this year to snap a 25-year CWS drought, but coughed up a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning in a Game 3 super regional loss to North Carolina last Sunday. Florida State, meanwhile, holds the unenviable distinction of having 24 CWS appearances, but no national championships.

The teams with the next-most all-time CWS appearances that are in the event this year are North Carolina (with 13) and Oklahoma (12).
