Morton girls soccer falls 3-1 in 2A state championship, Dunlap softball finishes 4th in 3A

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WMBD) – The Morton girls soccer team saw their best season in school history come to a disappoint end Saturday evening at North Central College in Naperville.

The Potters fell 3-1 in the 2A state championship game to Crystal Lake. After putting up four goals in Friday’s semifinal, Morton trailed 1-0 at the break for the state title.

With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Izzy Ripka bended a corner kick into the net to tie the game. It was her third goal of the Final Four weekend after putting away two goals against St. Francis in the semis.

But less than a minute later, a Morton foul in their own box led to a Crystal Lake corner kick that they converted to re-take the lead.

A third goal in the final minute of play put the game on ice. The Potters, while not the result they wanted, will always remember being part of such a historic team.

“Obviously I’m disappointed we didn’t win, but I’m just so proud of this team and the season we had. I mean, best record in school history, 19 shutouts in a row. I mean these girls are my best friends and I feel like that’s a reason we got this far.”

“You know the group will never be same, we have a special group. But we also know that we have in us to do one better than we did this year. So it’s a great season, but we’re chasing perfection, and that’s hard to track down, and three games this year we didn’t do well enough in, and one of them was tonight.”

Morton finishes the season at 26-2-1 as the IHSA 2A state runner-ups.
