Big news dropped on Friday morning that the Colorado Avalanche organization has filled the vacant position of Colorado Eagles head coach to lead their AHL franchise. It is the third consecutive summer in which a new bench boss has been named and perhaps the third time is a charm as Jussi Ahokas comes highly regarded and in demand after leading the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers to the Memorial Cup and has had a long history of success leading the Finnish National Junior teams.
Word out of Vancouver is that Ahokas turned down their offer to coach Abbotsford because he wasn’t offered enough money. The Avalanche aren’t exactly the organizational big spenders either but have invested money into supporting the Eagles in an effort to continue their competitive legacy. Is there another reason Ahokas chose Colorado, though? With Jared Bednar’s long term future uncertain it makes sense to bring in a budding star coach into the organization.
