An 8-pound fluke was netted this weekend as fluke fishermen continue to comb over just about every corner of the reefs and lumps for the flatfish.
The near doormat-size fish was brought into Creekside Outfitters in Waretown, where the shop said the angler, Matthew Walsh, landed it drifting a Gulp Nuclear Chicken in the ocean. The party boat fleet reported a lot of fluke in the 4- to 6-pound range as the peak part of the season is here.
Capt. Ryan Bogan on the Jamaica II said the results from this weekend's trips were "fair." He said there was lots to keep the reels cranking but the nets did not stay dry for long as his fares took their shots at keeper-size fish.
The bluefish cooperated for the most part this weekend. The bluefish boats are primarily working up the northern Monmouth County coastline. The fish have been in close over the rocky boat there and offshore a bit, and the boats have been moving around quite a bit to stay on top of them.
The fish have been sizing all over the place, with anglers reeling in small 2 pounders and wrestling with gators up over 12 pounds. The bonito and mackerel are coming in waves. The fishing for them at times has been fast, but they've also pulled back. Capt. Dave Riback on the Queen Mary said Saturday started off good with bonito and Spanish mackerel coming over the rail but the day ended with tussling for the big bluefish.
Fishermen casting lines off the Keansbury Pier into the Raritan Bay are getting tugs from the spots and croakers. There are have been small blues, fluke and an occasional weakfish pulled in, according to the pier's daily automated fising report.
Gabriel's Tackle in Brick reported catches of bigeye and yellowfin tuna in the Hudso Canyon. A lot of eyes will be on white marlin down in Beach Haven.
Nine more boats had ponied up and threw their lot into the 57th Beach Haven White Marlin Invitational as of this publication's deadline. The Captain's Meeting was Monday night so it's possible more registered, but as of deadline 52 boats were in. The tournament fishing days are Tuesday through Saturday.
Back for specators is the Dock Road Marlin Fest, a street fair festival with food trucks where the weigh-ins can be viewed. Passes are needed to gain entry. It will be open from 4 to 8:30 p.m. each day of the tournament.
Next week is 35th edition of the The MidAtlantic, one of the biggest big game tournaments on the East Coast. The contest is run out of the Canyon Club Resort Marina in Cape May and Sunset Marina in Ocean City, Maryland. The fishing days are Aug 17-21.
