Oh Mickey, you're so fine, you're so fine you blow Colorado Rockies' fans minds, hey Mickey.
Sure, it's taking on Toni Basil's classic song "Mickey" and tweaking the lyrics around Rockies outfielder Mickey Moniak. After the Rockies didn't trade him away at the MLB Trade Deadline on Monday, they came back and signed him to a two-year contract extension on Tuesday.
So, he's not going anywhere.
On Tuesday night, though, Moniak felt good enough to celebrate on the field. In the bottom of the third and down 5-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays, Moniak, came through in the clutch.
He sent a three-run home run over the wall at Coors Field, getting the Rockies in a tie ballgame situation at 5-5. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Colorado was up 7-5 over the Rays.
Willi Castro followed Moniak's blast with a two-run shot of his own in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Moniak had his name thrown around the MLB Trade Deadline chatter along with Hunter Goodman, Jake McCarthy, Kyle Freeland, and Michael Lorenzen. Those players remain on the Rockies' roster.
Apparently, Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes felt comfortable in not getting rid of them. Antonio Senzatela, who also had his name bandied about in trade chatter, was dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers at the deadline.
The announcement of Moniak's new deal hit X from the Rockies Club Information. According to their post, "The Rockies announced today that they have agreed to a two-year contract extension with OF Mickey Moniak covering the 2027-28 seasons. The extension covers his final year of arbitration (2027) and first year of free agency (2028)."
This really is a big deal as Moniak has been a steady contributor to the Colorado offense during his time with the team. The same thing can be said for McCarthy, who never takes a play off and busts it down the line even on a groundout.
As the Rockies now look ahead to the 2027 MLB season, they will have a few familiar faces still around. But there's no doubt that some type of youth movement is going to keep taking place. Rockies fans still want to see Charlie Condon elevated from Triple-A Albuquerque to the major-league roster.
Moniak doesn't have to worry anymore about whether he will or will not stay in the Mile High City. He gets more time to roam the outfield and provide some steady leadership as a Rockie.
