The NFL regular season is still three months away, but NFL writers and pundits are already deep into speculation about the 2027 NFL draft. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, this means speculating on whether or not things will go according to plan in 2026 and will the team need to reload at quarterback again in 2027.

In going over multiple mock drafts online, a pattern has already started to develop and draft writers are already zeroing in on a particular prospect for the Steelers. In multiple 2027 mock drafts, including Bleacher Report and Yahoo Sports have the Steelers selecting Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker.

Mestemaker is a tough prospect to break down due to lack of film. He joins Oklahoma State after transferring from North Texas and while his film has some flashes on it, the redshirt sophomore is incredibly raw as a player and has a ton of work to do in order to balance out his raw arm talent with some significant issues with mechanics and decision making.

Meanwhile, the Steelers are currently sorting out whether rookie Drew Allar or second-year quarterback Will Howard could be the starter next season after Aaron Rodgers calls it a career in 2027. This year's quarterback class is fascinating but much like last year, there's always a chance that many of these top players struggle and choose to return to school.
