MM 6.24: Maryland women’s lacrosse adds splash in transfer portal with attacker Gianna Monaco

With nearly 58% of its scoring production departing, Maryland women’s lacrosse head coach Cathy Reese has a busy offseason ahead.

But Reese’s effort to fill those offensive voids received a significant boost on Tuesday when Florida attacker Gianna Monaco signed with the Terps. The 2025 IWLCA All-American third-teamer will likely pair up with Lauren LaPointe in Maryland’s starting attack.

While she stepped away from lacrosse this past season due to personal reasons, Monaco brings plenty of talent to immediately star in College Park. She bagged 73 goals and 22 assists during the 2025 season, proving to be one of the nation’s top attackers.

“She’s a strong finisher,” Reese said in the press release. “She can catch, score and dodge. When you look at the players we have and who we’re graduating, we felt she would be a great fit for what we need offensively.”

However, her impact wasn’t solely limited to scoring; Monaco nabbed 22 ground balls and caused 10 turnovers. Those traits could aid a Terps team that finished with the third-fewest ground balls per game nationally last season.

While Maryland loses four of its five leading scorers, Monaco’s addition helps address one of the biggest offseason needs.

Maryland football also earned the commitment from three-star class of 2027 offensive tackle Kendon Bauer.

Maryland men’s basketball is pursuing one of the top class of 2028 guards in Blaze Johnson. The 6-foot-4 point guard currently ranks as the No. 16-ranked player in the class.
