A recent member of the Boston Red Sox could get traded for the second straight summer.

Teams are "keeping a close eye" on Dustin May, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Clubs are also monitoring St. Louis Cardinals relief pitchers Riley O'Brien and JoJo Romero.

However, that doesn't mean any of them will be available before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. The Cardinals have exceeded expectations during an anticipated rebuilding year, entering Monday with the National League's final wild-card spot at 27-19.

May should be familiar with midseason trade chatter. The Red Sox acquired him from the Los Angeles Dodgers last July in hopes of receiving a solid backend starter for the stretch run.

The 6-foot-6 righty didn't make a significant impact, registering a 5.40 ERA in nine starts. Meanwhile, James Tibbs III, who spent less than two months in Boston's organization following the Rafael Devers trade, has elevated his prospect standing in the Dodgers' farm system.

Despite his shaky 2025, May signed a one-year, $12.5 million deal with the Cardinals last offseason. He's posted a modest 4.81 ERA with the same WHIP (1.42) as last year, but May has turned the corner from a horrid start.

May began the 2026 campaign by allowing 13 runs in his first two turns. He's relinquished 13 earned runs in seven ensuing outings and has delivered four straight quality starts.

If he maintains that form, May could draw interest in another deadline deal and help a playoff hopeful more than he did Boston. But that would be a moot point if the Cardinals stay in the playoff mix.
