The Houston Astros badly needed an outfielder, and they addressed that need of theirs by pulling off a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays for center fielder Daulton Varsho. Varsho has long been one of the best defensive center fielders in MLB, and even though his numbers across the board have been down, the Astros identified him as someone who could help in their push for a postseason spot.

Varsho already made his debut for the Astros on Monday, lining up at center field and hitting cleanup during their 3-1 loss to the Blue Jays. It was a bit of a curious decision to have him bat cleanup, but this just shows how much belief Houston has in the 30-year-old outfielder.

And for MLB Network insider Jon Morosi, he gave the Astros top marks for their trade for Varsho, which required them to send Spencer Arrighetti to the Blue Jays.

“I love the Varsho trade. I think they did a very good job. He addressed a need that they had alongside Yordan Alvarez,” Morosi said. “You’ve got someone who was a World Series player last year, who was a beloved teammate, very popular guy in the clubhouse, one that would fit seamlessly in the Houston dynamic.”

Varsho is going to be a free agent at the end of the season, so there’s a chance that the Astros simply acquired a rental. But there is upside in the acquisition of the 30-year-old. He has some considerable pop (20 home runs, .548 SLG in 2025), and he won a Gold Glove back in 2024. Perhaps a change of scenery would bring out the best in him once more.

The man the Astros gave up, Arrighetti, currently has a 4.60 ERA in 17 starts this year (88.0 innings pitched). Arrighetti has three years left of team control following this season, but Houston, the team that’s in first place in the AL West, had to prioritize their outfield, hence their decision to bring Varsho in.
