Mitchell track athletes get season underway at SDSU indoor meet

Mar. 30—BROOKINGS, S.D. — Several Mitchell Kernels had solid performances in the season-opening Ruth Marske Invitational indoor track meet on Saturday, March 28 at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex at South Dakota State University.

A total of 31 schools from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota attended the meet, which served as a warm-up for most teams' outdoor season. The times and marks collected during early season indoor meets do not count for state meet qualification.

The Mitchell girls finished 13th in the field with 10 team points, while the Mitchell boys tied for 19th with 11 team points. Sioux Falls Lincoln (132.5) was the boys team champion, while Waukee Northwest (Iowa) was the top girls team with 160 points.

Audrey Miller had the day's best finish for the Kernels, placing third in the girls triple jump (33 feet, 11 inches), just behind Brandon Valley's Kadance Coughlin (36-5.25) and Watertown's Shauna Evenson (34-2.5).

Miller was also seventh in the long jump (15 feet, 4 inches) and 11th in the high jump (4-10). Ashley Haring was seventh in the high jump for Mitchell (5-0). Ryan Keys took 11th place for MHS in the girls 400 (1:03.48) and the team of Abby Hohn, Addi Hubbard, Avrie London and Keys had the Kernels' top relay finish in 13th place in the 4x200 (1:55.99).

For the Kernel boys, Carter Lee led the way with a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (23.01 seconds) and Alexier Padilla finished fourth in the 400-meter race (49.78). Vitus Carpenter was 11th in the triple jump with a top mark of 34 feet, 5 inches.

Hunter Patton placed 14th in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. Luke LeBrun placed 14th in the 300 hurdles (44.48) and Logan Bessler placed 14th in the shot put (44-3.25). The relay team of Padilla, Keniel Padilla, Camdyn ****** and Ben Johnson finished the 4x200 relay in ninth place (1:36.48).

Mitchell is in action again on Tuesday, March 31 for the DWU Indoor Meet at the Corrigan Fieldhouse, with field events starting at 11:30 a.m. and track events at noon.
