A Minnesota sports legend has played his last down in the NFL.
Former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday. He posted the announcement on social media two days after his current team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, was knocked out of the playoffs.
Thielen spent his first 11 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings before heading to the Carolina Panthers for a year with them. He returned to Minnesota this offseason when the team traded for him, but it was a short-lived reunion before the team waived him for him to pursue being on a team that could make the playoffs. He found that in the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the Cinderella run was not meant to be.
Thielen was undrafted out of Minnesota State in 2013 and joined the team as a training camp invite and he earned a meaningful role by his second season. The Deer Lakes native will retire as one of the team's best wide receivers all-time. He ranks 4th all-time in franchise history in receptions (543), 5th all-time in receiving yards (6,751), and third all-time in receiving touchdowns (55).
