The Minnesota Twins won their most recent series against the struggling Houston Astros, taking two of three at home. The Twins now sit four games under .500 at 23-27 and are entering an important stretch as June approaches.
If they can get hot, there is a chance they avoid selling at the trade deadline and perhaps even look to add to their current group. However, the more realistic scenario is that they move some of their most valuable pieces and continue retooling for the future.
Whether that means trading Joe Ryan or Byron Buxton remains unclear. For now, Minnesota is doing whatever it can to field the best roster possible.
The Twins announced before Friday’s series opener against the Boston Red Sox that infielder Tristan Gray has been placed on the paternity list. Outfielder Gabriel Gonzalez has been recalled from Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move.
Gonzalez was already on the 40-man roster after Minnesota selected his contract last year to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. He will make his MLB debut the first time he steps on the field. He was included in Friday’s starting lineup, hitting fifth and in left field.
Players can remain on the paternity list for up to three days, and in some cases they take an additional day or two on the restricted list. Therefore, Gonzalez's stay in the big leagues is expected to be brief, unless Minnesota sends a different player down instead of him.
Gray is expected to return during Minnesota’s upcoming series against the Chicago White Sox early next week.
The Twins likely did not want to make a 40-man roster move for such a short absence. They only have four healthy position players in Triple-A who can be optioned. Matt Wallner and Royce Lewis were just sent down this week to get back on track.
Gonzalez was a high profile amateur signing by the Seattle Mariners out of Venezuela and was the key piece Minnesota received in the Jorge Polanco trade back in 2024. His prospect stock has dipped slightly since then.
This season, the 22-year-old has posted a .216 batting average, .294 on-base percentage, .686 OPS, eight home runs and 21 RBIs in. 44 games. He has continued to dominate left-handed pitching. With the Red Sox going with southpaw Payton Tolle on Friday, it made sense to slot Gonzalez right there into the middle of the order.
