Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Makes Unique Free-Agency Pitch to LeBron James Amid Timberwolves' Emergence As Dark-Horse Suitor
LeBron James has decided to return for the 2026-27 NBA season and informed the Los Angeles Lakers that they should move forward without him, as he intends to continue his career “elsewhere.”
The Minnesota Timberwolves have emerged as one of the franchises interested in landing the four-time NBA champion, with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz publicly advocating for James to consider the dark-horse free-agency destination.
Tim Walz Joins Push to Bring LeBron James to Timberwolves
Minnesota has reshaped its roster with two major offseason trades, sending Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets and dealing Naz Reid to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for LaMelo Ball. The team is clearly focused on building a legitimate championship contender around the new pairing of Ball and Anthony Edwards, and adding James would instantly boost its title aspirations.
The Timberwolves’ interest has even reached the state’s political leaders, as Walz attempted to sway James by sharing a Minnesota Star Tribune headline declaring Minnesota the nation’s top state for “quality of life” and tagging the 22-time All-Star on X.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, James has asked his longtime agent, Rich Paul, to evaluate the market before he decides on his future. While the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Heat continue to be viewed as the leading suitors, The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported that Minnesota has also emerged as a team with genuine interest.
“What’s more, the Warriors do not appear to have clarity yet regarding James’ plans,” Amick wrote. “Cleveland and Miami are often cited as realistic landing spots as well, and the Minnesota Timberwolves are known to have interest if he felt like shocking the basketball world with that sort of move.”

Even at 41 years old, James remains one of the league’s most productive stars, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game during the 2025-26 season. He elevated his play in the playoffs with averages of 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists a night, helping LA eliminate the Houston Rockets in the opening round.
James also led the Lakers to the Western Conference’s fourth seed despite late-season injuries to Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. Their postseason run eventually ended in the second round against the then-defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
Though many expect contract value to influence James’ next decision, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that the 23-year veteran is prioritizing personal “happiness” above financial considerations.
“Rich Paul has made it clear that LeBron’s No. 1 priority for the season is happiness,” Windhorst said. “Happiness is not money … We’re going to figure it out on the salary sheets and whatnot, but it’s not gonna be necessarily who’s got the most money to offer.”
If the Timberwolves can convince James that Minnesota gives him the best chance to capture his fifth title, one of the most unexpected moves of the offseason could come to fruition.
