Mar. 11—This story will be updated later tonight.
MINNEAPOLIS — Amelia Mills could not be stopped.
The Rochester Mayo sophomore and star guard put her team on her back the second half of its Class 4A girls basketball state quarterfinal game against No. 6 seed Monticello and carried it to a drama-drenched 73-71 win at the University of Minnesota's Williams Arena on Wednesday.
It lands the Spartans in Thursday's 8 p.m. state semifinal game against No. 2 seed Rosemount. Mayo is the No. 3 seed.
In a game where the lead changed hands multiple times in both halves, it was point guard Mills' 26 points that were the biggest difference in the contest. She sizzled from the field, going 11 for 18 overall and hit 4 of 5 3-point shots.
The blazing fast sophomore also hit a driving shot with just less than a minute remaining that gave Mayo a lead that it did not give up.
Mayo also got a crucial 17 points from fellow sophomore Maggie Dyer. The 5-foot-11 forward was 6-for-8 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
And there were countless contributions from others on this Mayo team, which was playing in the state tournament for the first time in 11 years.
It pushed Mayo to a gaudy 29-1 and has its winning streak at 27 games. Monticello slipped to 25-5.
