The women’s basketball regular season has come to a close which means two things: 1) March Madness is nigh and 2) postseason accolades are rolling out. In the case of the latter, #6 LSU got plenty of recognition from the league office.
Point guard MiLaysia Fulwiley was named the SEC’s Sixth Woman of the Year, while Flau’Jae Johnson, Mikaylah Williams, and ZaKiyah Johnson earned All-SEC honors.
Fulwiley has been every thing LSU could have hoped for and more in her first season coming over from South Carolina. She is the definition of a weapon coming off the bench, and is averaging 14.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.1 steals per contest.
Despite being 5’10”, Fulwiley leads LSU with 41 blocks; her 93 steals is the second-most in the SEC and ranks 13th nationally. Fulwiley also set a career-high in scoring with a 26-point effort against Ole Miss, and recorded her first ever double-double against Missouri (22 points and 11 rebounds).
Fulwiley is the third Tiger to ever win Sixth Woman of the Year, joining Sylvia Fowles in 2005 and Allison Hightower in 2008. She also won the accolade last season with the Gamecocks.
Fulwiley was the biggest individual winner on this LSU team, but she is not the only Tiger to be recognized by the SEC.
Flau’Jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams were both named First-Team All-SEC, while ZaKyah Johnson landed on the All-Freshman team.
Flau’Jae and Williams have now been First-Team All-SEC in each of the past two seasons. Flau’Jae is averaging 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, while Mikaylah is right behind her with 13.5 points per game. Williams had maybe the best game of her LSU career Sunday in Starkville with 26 points and a career-best 15 rebounds.
ZaKyah Johnson has been a massive part of LSU’s top-ranked recruiting class, and her efforts this year earns her a spot on the All-Freshman team. ZaKyah is averaging 10.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game and has started for the Tigers 18 times. She is the ninth Tiger in program history to earn Freshman All-SEC honors.
LSU will have the next couple of days off before heading up to Greenville for the SEC Tournament. The Tigers enter postseason play at 26-4 and 12-4 in the SEC, which was good enough for the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. LSU earned a double-bye and won’t play until Friday afternoon (1:30 P.M., ESPN) in the quarterfinal round. They will either play #5 Oklahoma, #12 Florida, or #13 Mississippi State.
